A Taste of Québec: Culture, Tradition and Everyday Moments

Have you ever gone somewhere and realized the culture shows up in the smallest, most unexpected ways?

That was something I didn’t really expect before going to Québec City. It wasn’t something that felt overly curated or done just for tourists, it kind of existed naturally in the way people live, the food, and the traditions that are still part of daily life.

One of the highlights for me was visiting a sugar shack Érablière du Lac-Beauport, where we had a traditional Canadian breakfast and learned more about the culture behind maple syrup. It wasn’t anything overly fancy, but kind of what made it stand out. Learning about how maple sap is collected and turned into syrup made me realize how much history is behind something we usually don’t think twice about.

We also got to try tire d’érable, where hot maple syrup is poured onto snow and rolled into a lollipop. It was really fun to experience, and I’m kind of glad I tried it, but I’ll be honest, I don’t think I’m the biggest fan of it. Which is kind of surprising because I love sugar and anything sweet, but it’s not something I would go out of my way to have again.

And honestly, some of the best parts of the trip weren’t even the planned activities. Just walking through the city, noticing small details, and taking everything made the experience feel more personal. It wasn’t about rushing from one place to another, it was more about just being there and expereing it for what it was.

Coming from Toronto, where everything feels fast paced and busy all the time, Québec City felt like a complete shift. It was quieter, slower, and honestly kind of refreshing. Even though it wasn’t peak travel season, I actually liked that it wasn’t crowded. It made everything feel more genuine and allowed me to really take in the environment around me

I think what really stood out to me the most is how culture shows up in both big and small ways. It’s in the traditions, like maple production, but also in the everyday moments that you don’t always think about. Québec City felt like a place where everything blends together naturally, and thats what made the experience feel more memorable.
